Queensland Maroons head coach Billy Slater has made significant changes to the lineup for Game 2 of the 2025 State of Origin series in Perth. The reshuffle sees Patrick Carrigan moving to the bench, relinquishing his starting spot to Trent Loiero, who impressed Slater during Game 1. Star player Cameron Munster will lead the team as captain, taking over from Carrigan.
Jeremiah Nanai, who played a full 80 minutes in the series opener, joins Carrigan on the bench for Game 2. With Beau Fermor omitted from the squad, Kurt Capewell will step into the second-row position. Additionally, Brisbane Broncos’ five-eighth Ezra Mam has been named as the 18th man, while Kurt Mann earns his debut in the Origin arena, securing a spot on the bench.
Tom Dearden will take the reins at halfback, replacing Daly Cherry-Evans, while Valentine Holmes will shift to the centres and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow to the wing. The Queensland team for State of Origin Game 2 will feature Kalyn Ponga at fullback, Xavier Coates and Robert Toia on the wings, and Moeaki Fotuaika at prop, among others.
In a surprising move, Loiero will start in the number 13 jersey, having previously played off the bench. Nanai, Carrigan, and Nanai will provide impact from the interchange, with Lindsay Collins rounding out the forward pack. The extended reserves include Corey Horsburgh and potential debutant Jack Howarth.
The changes made by Slater indicate a strategic shift in Queensland’s approach for Game 2, aiming to capitalize on the strengths of the new lineup and secure a crucial victory in the series. With key players stepping into different roles and fresh faces added to the mix, the Maroons will be looking to deliver a standout performance in Perth.
As the State of Origin series intensifies, the Queensland team’s reshuffle sets the stage for an exciting and closely contested battle against New South Wales. The adjustments made by Slater reflect a proactive approach to addressing the team’s dynamics and maximizing player potential, setting the scene for a compelling clash between the two rugby league powerhouses.
